PUMP Advocacy Archives
Since 1999, PUMP has served as the voice of young and young-thinking people in the Pittsburgh Region. The following timeline represents PUMP’s past advocacy on issues facing our region.
2006
Gaming
- Held a forum at the City Theater featuring Pittsburgh's 3 casino applicants
- Surveyed membership on the issue
- PUMP Executive Director, Erin Molchany, and Board President, Belinda Yeager; provide testimony at the State Gaming Control Board Public Hearings on April 19, 2006, presenting the results of PUMP's survey as testimony.
2003 - 2004
City Fiscal Crisis
- Held a political forum with the Mayor to discuss the city’s fiscal crisis
- Surveyed membership on the issue
- Prepared speeches/testimony surrounding the PUMP’s preferred solution
- Wrote several Op-eds in area newspapers advocating PUMP’s views on the issue (e.g. http://www.postgazette.com/pg/pp/03337/246533.stm)
Pittsburgh Public Schools
- Held School Board Candidates Night
- Played a key role on the Mayor’s Commission on Public Schools
2001
Merit Hiring for Row Offices
- PUMP joined a lawsuit to force a merit hiring system on all areas of county government.
- ImPAct—Stretching our political voice statewide
- On September 7-9th, 2001, PUMP hosted a first-ever statewide convention for young Professionals in Pittsburgh. This incredibly successful event attracted over 500 young professional attendees from across the Pittsburgh region and the state.
1999
Downtown Redevelopment
- Street Walking – the “411” on the Fifth & Forbes. A guided walking tour of the area followed by a panel discussion in which representatives of the Mayor’s Office and History and Landmarks Foundation discussed their individual plans
- Membership Survey – PUMP surveyed its membership on the key attributes of downtown development that are most important to them.
- Walking Tour and Forum with Urban Retail Properties. PUMP held a forum at which PUMP members presented their research and survey results to Urban Retail Properties
