New Food Stamp Ruling Restricts Benefits

Of the nearly 1.9 million Pennsylvanians receiving food stamp benefits annually, 33,000 will be affected by a new ruling that restricts their benefits. Starting June 1, unemployed adults without dependents will only be able to receive food stamp benefits for three months within a three-year period. There are exceptions for people receiving disability benefits, the homeless, victims of domestic violence, people younger than 18 or older than 50, those involved in a drug treatment program, or pregnant women. The ruling will also not affect people living in areas of the state that have high unemployment rates - mostly rural central Pennsylvania counties and a few cities including McKeesport and Harrisburg. Estimates state that 8,000 people in Allegheny County will be affected.
