Carnegie Mellon University's CREATE Lab released a mobile phone app that engages local residents in tracking pollution. Smell Pittsburgh asks residents to rate the air quality based upon what they smell using the following scale:1) Just fine!, 2) Barely noticeable, 3) Definitely noticeable, 4) It's getting pretty bad, and 5) About as bad as it gets. The app's map-view shows smell reports submitted by date and allows residents to track odor location frequency.
