Our Approach to Business Partnerships

As part of our mission and work, PUMP actively seeks business partnerships with local and national vendors that can provide desired products, services, and opportunities for PUMP’s members that enrich the quality of life for young people.  This Business Partnership Program is a key benefit of PUMP membership. Our experience has shown us that the strongest business partnerships incorporate and embrace the following three components:

1. Business Partner Benefit

Partnerships make sound business sense and further the partner’s business goals.  Business partners benefit by gaining targeted access to young people in Pittsburgh, increased sales, and an endorsement through PUMP (sometimes exclusive).

2. PUMP Member Benefit

Partnerships provide PUMP’s members access to discounted or enhanced goods, services, and opportunities that they could not get otherwise on the open market.

3. PUMP Organizational Benefit

Partnerships provide PUMP (the organization) with an income stream to further support our mission and membership.  PUMP’s business model is structured to maximize earned income to enhance long-term organizational sustainability.  At a minimum all business partners seeking endorsements through PUMP maintain an annual business membership.

It is our intent to structure all business partnerships based on this approach and work diligently to see them thrive over time.  In all business partnerships, PUMP commits to investing time and energy in marketing and promoting the partnership and providing connections to our members.  In return, we ask that business partners view this relationship approach as an investment in young people and PUMP that will pay great dividends in the future for all involved.  If business partnerships are well structured, our partners will succeed in achieving their business goals, our members will see great benefit, and PUMP will be strong as an organization.

Business Partnership Process

PUMP uses a market research based process to identify potential programs to offer to our members. That process begins with periodic polling of our membership to clearly identify priorities for products and services.  Once a priority has been identified, PUMP researches businesses and organizations that provide products and services that match with member priorities.  PUMP staff then contacts identified potential business partners to gauge interest, discuss partnership ideas, and - if a shared interest exists – develop a partnership program.  In relatively rare cases, PUMP may issue a Request for Proposals for exclusive business partnerships.

Although PUMP does not generally accept unsolicited proposals for discount programs and business partnerships, we do encourage vendors to contact us to inquire about priorities and to educate us about their products and services.  Questions or inquiries should be directed to Annie Clough, PUMP Programming & Member Development Manager, at or (412) 338-2133.
