Gerrymandering in PA: Update + Call to Action 6/28/18

PUMP Author Active + Engaged Residents, Advocacy, General

The most recent efforts to pass legislation in Pennsylvania to reform the redistricting process have failed. See this article for more information on recent developments. We at PUMP contacted PA House and Senate leadership to advocate for this legislation this week, and we encourage you to do the same.

As advocates of fair, equitable legislative districts, we have been hoping and working to see legislation pass before July 6 so that it would take effect prior to the 2020 census and the subsequent next round of redrawing district lines. Take action TODAY to ensure that our legislators know we want the power to redraw district lines given to the people, instead of remaining in the hands of legislators.

Here are more ways to take action:

CONTACT HOUSE LEADERSHIP

Representative Mike Turzai (Speaker): (412) 369-2230
Representative Dave Reed (Majority Leader): (724) 465-0220
Representative Frank Dermody (Minority Leader): (724) 274-4770

Script: Hi. I’m a Pennsylvania resident. I’m calling because Representative _______ is a member of the House leadership. Redistricting reform is an important issue to me and I’m very disappointed the House went on summer recess without dealing with this crucial topic. I would like to see Representative ________ do everything in his power to accomplish two things: 1) Recall the House to Harrisburg to deal with redistricting reform; and 2) Schedule the Samuelson amendment (A08876) to SB 22 for the FIRST vote. Thank you.

CONTACT SENATE LEADERSHIP

Senator Joe Scarnati (President Pro Tem): (814) 265-2030
Senator Jake Corman (Majority Leader): (814) 355-0477
Senator Jay Costa (Minority Leader): (412) 241-6690

Script: Hi. I’m a Pennsylvania resident. I’m calling because Senator _______ is a member of the Senate leadership. Redistricting reform is an important issue to me and I’m very disappointed the state legislature went on summer recess without dealing with this crucial topic. If and when the House returns to Harrisburg to pass the Samuelson amendment (A08876) to SB 22 and to pass SB 22, I would like to see the Senate return for a vote of concurrence. Thank you.

Subject: Send a letter: Tell PA leadership: Recall legislators to Harrisburg to pass redistricting reform

Body:

Friend,

I wrote a letter for the Fair Districts PA letter campaign “Tell PA leadership: Recall legislators to Harrisburg to pass redistricting reform”.

The Pennsylvania Legislature may be on summer recess, but their work in Harrisburg is far from finished. They left town before passing a redistricting reform bill (SB 22) that represents our best chance in decades to end gerrymandering in Pennsylvania and thus restore confidence in our elections and state legislature.

Will you take a moment to contact leadership in the House and Senate to ask them to return to Harrisburg immediately to finish the job of passing reform? Specifically, the House needs to pass the Samuelson amendment (A08876) and then pass SB 22. Next, the Senate needs to vote concurrence.

We cannot wait another decade for real reform on this foundational issue. Contact leadership now.
