SUMMARY:ReelQ: America in Transition Documentary Screening
DESCRIPTION:ReelQ: America in Transition – “Where Is My Refuge” Documentary Screening at Alphabet City\nEvent description: \n“In honor of Trans Day of Visibility\, ReelQ presents a screening of “Where Is My Refuge\,” episode 4 of the award-winning Sundance documentary series America in Transition. This screening will be followed by a discussion and Q&A led by the subject of the documentary episode\, Nina Chaubal. \nAmerica in Transition is an award-winning\, Sundance-backed documentary series exploring relationships\, family\, and social issues with trans people of color across the United States. Each episode explores one person’s story in depth\, tackling intersectional issues such as HIV criminalization\, living as trans in the South\, family acceptance\, trans exclusion from the military\, and immigrant detention. \nEpisode 4: Where Is My Refuge follows the story of Nina Chaubal. After growing up misunderstood in India\, Nina fell in love with another trans woman in the Bay. Together\, they built a suicide hotline by road-tripping across small town America and connecting with thousands of trans people. Her life changed in an instant when Arizona authorities stopped her for being brown\, insisting that her marriage was invalid. In the month since her detention\, Nina’s been caught in limbo\, afraid she’ll be forced to leave the country where she’s saved so many lives. \nFeatured Speaker: \nNina Chaubal grew up in Mumbai\, India. In 2015\, she left her job at Google to co-found the Trans Lifeline\, the first ever crisis hotline for transgender people. In just three years\, Trans Lifeline trained 700 transgender volunteers who answered 40\,000 calls. Now Nina is launching an intentional community\, art space\, and small business incubator in the Mojave Desert. She is helping foster numerous trans-owned small businesses.” \nLearn more and register for this free screening here. \n

SUMMARY:The Art of Being L.C. - Film Screening and Q&A at City of Asylum
DESCRIPTION:The Art of Being L.C. film screening and Q&A\nThe Art of Being L.C. will be screened for only the second time ever at City of Asylum on July 2. After the screening\, there will be a conversation and Q&A with the filmmaker\, Carl King\, via Skype. \nThe Art of Being L.C. is a story of an artist freed from the cold\, gray life of institutions to the warm colorful world of pastels and water colors. \nIn 1999\, L.C. (Lois Curtis) stood before the U.S. Supreme Court to demand her right under the Americans with Disabilities Act to live in community rather than be “unjustifiably segregated” in institutions. Her successful argument before the Supreme Court became known as the Olmstead Decision. “Olmstead” secured Lois Curtis’ place in American History as a liberator for people with disabilities and set Lois free to discover her own gifts as an artist. \nReserve FREE tickets here.
