SUMMARY:3rd Annual Summit: Deconstructing the American Dream
DESCRIPTION:The World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh is excited to host our 3rd Annual Summit on Wednesday\, November 16\, 2022\, 9AM–3PM at the University of Pittsburgh! \nAt this year’s Summit\, we will explore the theme of Deconstructing the American Dream through the lens of immigrants and refugees. \nIn this past year\, Pittsburgh has experienced an increase in refugees from Afghanistan\, Democratic Republic of the Congo\, Ukraine\, and other countries. Do they believe the American Dream is achievable? What can the latest demographic data tell us about this issue and its impact on our economy\, community\, and daily life? \nWe will explore these questions through a keynote address\, cultural showcases\, and interactive sessions that take an in-depth look at refugee resettlement\, belonging\, implicit bias\, and cultural competence and humility.\nBy amplifying leading voices in the immigrant inclusion space\, we expect to educate attendees on current data and trends\, while also sparking an inward look at our own assumptions\, values\, and patterns in order to support meaningful local action. \nWhether you are a business leader\, community leader\, or educator\, you are invited to connect and network as we learn more about key trends on our changing demography and how to build more inclusive spaces and institutions.

Our goal is for our public programs to be a platform for diverse audiences and speakers to come together and build stronger\, more resilient connections that transcend all communities so that as we move forward\, we will be stronger together. To focus our programming on supporting stronger communities\, the Council will focus on the following four thematic areas for all public program offerings: Learning Hour\, PGH Ingenuity\, Community Gathering\, and World Recess. \nAbout Chef Claudy Pierre \nIn a Haitian-American household in Brooklyn\, cooking became Chef Claudy’s escape as he helped his grandmother create meals for their large family. After graduating high school\, Claudy moved to Pittsburgh\, PA to pursue culinary arts. Amidst the COVID-19 world pandemic\, Chef Claudy launched the Third Meal Project\, which is a weekly meal delivery program that provides dinner\, groceries\, and snacks to families and elders in need. Learn more about Chef Claudy and his nonprofit the Eat Initiative. \nAbout the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh \nThe World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh’s mission is to provide a pathway for a more globally minded region\, offering students and the community a learning space that covers key international issues. \nAbout PUMP \nPUMP’s mission is to make Pittsburgh the most dynamic and diverse place by engaging\, educating\, and mobilizing all young people to create change in our community. Each year\, we serve nearly 30\,000 individuals\, primarily under the age of 40\, through our programming.
