2021 Capital Budget: Make your voice heard!

The City of Pittsburgh Office of Management and Budget and Office of Community Affairs are collecting community input on the 2021 Capital Budget through an online survey and three virtual meetings.

The Capital Budget refers to money that is allocated to acquire or maintain fixed assets, including things like land, buildings, and equipment. The City of Pittsburgh’s Capital Budget includes capital projects that fall under three main projects; Mobility Projects, Community Projects, and Recreation Projects.

It is always essential for community members to weigh in on the budgeting process and ensure that the budget reflects community needs and values. However, COVID-19 has made engagement even more important. Many in our community are suffering from the health, economic, and social impacts of the pandemic. The City budget has also been impacted by the economic crisis. Tax revenues are down significantly from 2019. The City has closely monitored the financial situation, instituting a hiring freeze and developing plans for 10% cuts in non-personnel spending across all departments.

In a press release, Mayor Peduto emphasized that the budget will be tighter in 2021 and asked for community input, stating, “We need our residents to tell us what’s happening in their communities so that we can be intentional with our limited resources to meet their needs.”

Community Survey:

All residents are also encouraged to fill out the 2021 Capital Budget Survey by June 19th.
