PSL Officials Expectations

All PSL Officials are required to accept that they have read and understood the expectations that are outlined for them in the document below. These expectations are the criteria in which all officials will be evaluated on throughout each season. Failure to meet or follow these expectations could result in a reduction or removal from assigned games or leagues. Exemplary observations on these expectations during seasonal reviews could result in additional perks to be outlined by the PSL Officials Manager.

Expectations of PSL Officials
Must Have:
• Access to equipment bin codes (when applicable)
• Access to on-call schedule (pinned in GroupMe chats by sport)
• CPR Certification completed and on file with PSL staff
• Good attitude
• GroupMe account with access to PSL sports chats
• Knowledge of sport and rules
• Officials’ shirt
Admin Stuff:
• All officials are required to submit the following paperwork to PUMP’s Executive Director, Josiah, before they officiate:
o 1099
 A blank 1099 must be filled out and submitted to Josiah to confirm your contact information.
o CPR and First Aid Certificate
o Direct Deposit
 A voided check must be included if using a checking account.
o W9
 W9s will be issued to all officials for tax purposes.
Punctuality:
• Arrive with enough time to set up the field/facility, check players in, and get the first game started on time.
• Stay for the duration of the games.
• Enforce time limitation rules as they are written.
• Provide notification of days when officials are unavailable.
o Reach out to staff AND post in GroupMe as soon as officials know dates they may need a sub.
o Failure to show up without notification will result in officials being relieved immediately.
Game Expectations:
• Attendance must be taken and logged in League Lab before each game, each week.
o IDs MUST be checked during week one and during playoffs when taking attendance. Subsequent weeks it’s reasonable to verbally take roll.
• Make sure field/facility conditions are safe for game play.
• Hold a pregame meeting with captains before each game.
o Make sure team captains are aware of any league or ground rules pertaining to that field/facility.
• Be vocal! Announce the inning and score.
o Flag football: At every change of possession, after every score, and as requested by players.
o Kickball/Softball: After every inning and as requested by players.
o Volleyball: At the start of every service by teams.
• Keep scoreboards up to date (when applicable).
• Use proper signals.
• Be fair and responsible.
o Officials will be relieved of their duties immediately for any reason that the PSL deems appropriate, such as drinking prior to or during games, inappropriate behavior towards players in the league, or failure to show up without notification.
• Be focused on the game.
• Move! Do not stand in one place for the duration of the game.
o Come out from behind home plate (when applicable).
o Be in position to make the call.
• Issue warnings and enforce ejections when necessary.
o Ejected players MUST leave the field/facility immediately upon ejection. The game shall not resume until the player has left the premises. NO EXCEPTIONS.
• Settle any disputes - be able to handle conflict and deescalate.
• Call the game if the field or court becomes too unsafe to play on.
o Notify PSL’s on-call staff member if games will not be resumed.
• Keep score and fill out supervisor report on League Lab after the game.
• Only call the on-call person in case of an emergency. Emergencies include:
o Player(s) becomes severely injured.
o Permit issues – Someone else is using the field/facility during our scheduled time.
o Field/facility is unplayable.
o Weather makes field unsafe for play, or weather becomes unsafe to play in (i.e. lightning)
 If a game is called, please notify the on-call person immediately.
o Lights go out before scheduled shut-off time.
o Softball lights turn off at 10:30pm unless told otherwise.
o Kickball lights turn off at 10:45pm unless told otherwise.
