PUMP supports the creation of a federal paid family and medical leave program to support the millions of people in the U.S. who do not have access to paid leave. Since 2019, we have endorsed the Family Care Act, state legislation that would provide paid leave for Pennsylvania workers. We have now joined local and national organizations in calling on congress to pass paid leave as part of the Build Back Better legislation. The United States is one of only a few countries that does not guarantee paid leave for workers.
Currently, the proposed Build Back Better legislation would create a program that provides 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave to most workers (NBC Philadelphia).
The legislation must be passed by both the U.S. House and Senate and is subject to change as negotiations around Build Back Better continue. Build Back Better is a historic package for many reasons, because it centers care – including paid leave – in transformational ways.
