Air Quality Observation Hike

May 12, 2020 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Join PUMP, the PSL and Group Against Smog and Pollution (GASP) for a bio-indicator walk to learn more about the effects of Pittsburgh’s Air Quality on ourselves and the environment around us. GASP’s bio-indicator walks are part of their Athletes United for Healthy Air campaign.

What to Expect:

We will talk about how there are some natural indicators of air quality. We’ll go through a few historic examples and then talk about what we’ll be looking for during the walk. This includes lichen and different plants that are sensitive to ozone pollution. Walkers will receive booklets with photos, and then we will look around for those plants to see what we can find and what condition they’re in. After the walk we list off what we found and discuss how much we are able to infer about air quality. We will also talk about how athletes are considered a sensitive population when it comes to air quality and a few simple ways to minimize exposure.

This event is POSTPONED! When we can meet again we will do so at the Visitors Center in Schenley Park (Across from Phipps). The walk will last from 6:00-7:30. All attendees will receive a PSL t-shirt.

Learn more about GASP!

The Group Against Smog and Pollution works to improve air quality to protect human, environmental, and economic health in Southwestern Pennsylvania.

Athletes United for Healthy Air (AU) is exactly what is sounds like–a campaign bringing together athletes of all kinds to champion clean air. Whether you’re a casual runner or an avid bicyclist, it’s important to stay informed about our regional air quality. Participants in this campaign will learn more about southwestern Pennsylvania’s air pollution, ways to minimize their exposure, and how to activate their voices for clean air.
