A Conversation with Monique Morris, Author of Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools

March 9, 2016 @ 6:00 pm

Join A+ SchoolsPUMP, and partners for a conversation with Monique W. Morris, author and co-founder of the National Black Women’s Justice Institute.

Monique will be discussing her new book Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools (The New Press). The first 100 people to register for the event will receive a complimentary copy of the book (must be in attendance to receive it).

Pushout is a groundbreaking look at the lives of African American girls by the Ebony.com writer whose previous book was featured on MSNBC, the Brian Lehrer Show, and in Essence magazine.

For four years Monique W. Morris, author of Black Stats, chronicled the experiences of black girls across the country whose intricate lives are misunderstood, highly judged—by teachers, administrators, and the justice system—and degraded by the very institutions charged with helping them flourish. Morris shows how, despite obstacles, stigmas, stereotypes, and despair, black girls still find ways to breathe remarkable dignity into their lives in classrooms, juvenile facilities, and beyond.
